The USD 438 Board of Education met on Monday, October 14, where they discussed the various topics concerning their district as they progress throughout the first semester. These included projects, personnel, and awards given to Skyline, as well as a few presentations. Board President Rex Robinson called the meeting to order at 7:30 P.M.

The most significant part of the October meeting came when the 2024 KSDE Awards were presented to the district. There were three different ones, and they all had different tiers of “Copper”, “Silver”, and “Gold”. The first category was “Prepared for Postsecondary”, and USD 438 was awarded “Copper” in that one. Next was “Graduation”, to which Skyline was awarded a “Gold” designation. Lastly, a “Silver” was awarded to the district for the category “Postsecondary Effectiveness”.

Per usual, the board went through the materials of the consent agenda, which included the reading and approval of the previous meeting’s minutes, the approval of bills and special funds, and the treasurer’s report. When these items were all discussed, a motion was made by board members Nicole Curtis and Mark Graber to approve them, which passed.

Following this was the Superintendent’s Report, which was given by Becca Flowers. In this report, she talked about a visit from Dr. Randy Watson, who is the KSDE Commissioner of Education. She also said that State Board of Education Member Dennis Hershberger was in attendance.

Next, a presentation was given by school principals Diane House and Steven Novotny, which concerned several items. They first reported on their building activities, and then they transitioned to SRP Training, KAP information, and an overview of the Strategic Plan Action Plan.

Items from old business included:

– An update on the parking lot lighting project, which said that it is close to completion.

After a recessed executive session to discuss non-elected personnel, the board offered Bryant Tatro a contract as a bus driver for the 2024-25 school year.
