On Saturday, February 15, the Regional Science Olympiad was held at Fort Hays State University. This contest is a regional tournament that is open to teams from the northwestern part of the state. There are two divisions, middle and high school. Science Olympiad is an international organization that aims to improve science education and encourage students to pursue careers in science. It has four levels of competition: Invitationals, Regionals, State, and Nationals. The top scorers in each event receive prizes and scholarships.

Skyline sent students from both divisions and they placed as follows.

High School Division:

Fossils – 3rd Place – Ruth Carter

Astronomy – 3rd Place – Jiya Bhakta

Write It Do It – 3rd Place – Jiya Bhakta, Aaron Lucas

Entomology – 2nd Place – Avery Shafer

In the Middle School Division:

Reach for the Stars – 1st Place and a state qualifier – Charlie Rose

Charlie also placed 3rd in the team competition as a one-person team. This win qualifies him to advance to the state competition that will be held on Saturday, April 5 at Wichita State University. If Charlie were to win at state, he would advance to the National Tournament, which takes place at a different college campus each year. On Friday and Saturday, May 23-24, 2025, nationals will be at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Good luck to Charlie at state!
