Shots fired by elderly man

Shots fired on Labor Day in Kiowa County, Kansas created a tense afternoon for area residents.

On Monday, September 3, law enforcement officers from the Greensburg Police Department, Kiowa County Sheriff, Pratt County Sheriff, and Kansas Highway Patrol departments were all alerted to a dangerous situation in the City of Greensburg.

According to a press release from the Greensburg Police Department, at approximately 4:35 p.m., officers from the Greensburg Police Department and Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 400 block of Main St in Greensburg on a shots fired call. When officers arrived, they discovered an 87-year-old male had fired shots inside his residence and barricaded himself inside the residence.

Residents nearby were were evacuated at that time, and calls for assistance were made to the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office by the local law enforcement units.

Greensburg Police said that by 7:15 p.m., negotiations with the suspect were successful and he was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported to civilians or law enforcement. The case is under continued investigated by the Greensburg Police Department.
