For several months now, the Tri-County Tribune has been recognizing Athlete of the Week students from our coverage area. According to Gallup surveys and university studies found online, student-athletes are more likely to be “thriving” in four of the five key areas of well-being than non-athletes in today’s education systems. These areas include the purpose, social, community, financial, and physical domains. Differences in well-being between student-athletes and non-athletes are seen among across all gender and race classes.
Learning to be coachable, work as a member of a team, and achieve goals are just a few reasons why student-athletes often rise to the top of their chosen pathways in life, long after their high school and college athletic careers have ended. Athletics are not more important than band, music, theatre, scholars bowl, or other extra-curricular activities offered by area school districts, but sports are something that many identify with and like to keep up with in terms of accomplishments by local participants.
The Tri-County Tribune continues to recognize the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication that our local high school athletes have given to their teams and individual sports throughout the respective seasons of sport. We are currently on week 4 of winter sports recognition for basketball, wrestling, and rodeo competitors. Please visit www.tricountytribune.news and click on the Sports tab to find past and present Tri-County Tribune Athletes of the Week. And if you see the notifications on Facebook on the Tri-County Tribune page, please like and share so our athletes will get recognition on a wider scale.
Athletes recognized for winter sports achievements thus far include: Brock Deterding (Week 1, KCHS boys basketball), Lydia Reed (Week 1, SJHS girls basketball), Diego Esparza (Week 2, Macksville boys basketball), Kooper Wesley (Week 2, Skyline girls basketball), Taye Wilson (Week 3, Pratt boys wrestling), Wendy Candia (Week 3, Pratt girls wrestling). Congratulations to all local athletes and teams as we honor notable accomplishments in coming weeks.
All 2024 fall sports athletes recognized by the Tribune are also searchable under the Sports tab at www.tricountytribune.news.
