The Tri-County Tribune will be naming one male and one female as our Athletes of the Week throughout the 2024 fall sports season, picking from high school students in the five schools in our coverage area: Pratt High School, Skyline High School, Macksville High School, Stafford High School, St. John High School, and Kiowa County High School. At the end of the season, readers will vote on their favorite High School Fall Athlete of the season. Watch our website at www.tricountytribune.news for more information on this end-of-season award.
Anyone may nominate a player for an Athlete of the Week award, simply email stats and other important information from the schools in our coverage area only to Tri-County Tribune Editor Jennifer Stultz at jstultz@cherryroad.com.
In week two of our local student-athlete recognition program we honor Skyline High School cross country senior runners Jude Nelson and Ethan Robinson on the male side. The Tri-County Tribune female athlete of the week for the first week of October 2024 is Brylie Ackerman, senior volleyball player from Skyline.
Jude Nelson and Ethan Robinson have been pushing each other (and their teammates at Skyline High School) all season, often finishing neck and neck in the top 10 of their races. On Saturday, September 28 at Larned, Nelson finished 1st and Robinson in 4th place. Coach Mike Neifert said the two are great team leaders and the reason why Skyline has won all four of their competitive meets this year. The Pratt-Skyline cross country team is ranked 1st in State by Sports in Kansas for 1A Cross Country. Congratulations Thunderbirds!
This week’s Tri-County Tribune girls’ athlete of the week is Skyline senior Brylie Ackerman. This senior volleyball player has smashed 30 serve aces so far this year. Just this past week, Ackerman added 2 more serving aces to her total in the Thunderbird’s Saturday, Sept. 28 win over Ness City. Ackerman is ranked in the top 99 in Kansas for 1 stat, top 18 in Class 1A – Division I for 1 stat, and top 6 in Heart of the Plains for 1 stat. Brylie Ackerman just happened to be the Skyline 2024 Homecoming Queen this past Friday, as well.
