The Pratt High School boys’ golf team has gotten off to a hot start to begin the 2025 campaign. Recently, the team was able to capture their annual home tournament title, which was one of Head Coach Tim Rector’s top goals for the season.
This year, the tournament fell on Thursday, April 3 with several competitive teams in attendance. These included schools like Cheney, Kingman, and others who had tough golfers. However, Pratt knew that they held an edge in knowing their home course well at Park Hills, and they wanted to take full advantage of it.
After a full 18 holes of golf, senior Grant McAtee was atop the scoring for the Greenbacks. He shot +1 on his round, which was a 73. This was good enough to give him the 2025 Pratt Invitational title, as the next closest opponent finished 3 strokes back of McAtee.
Also finishing in the top five was freshman Beau Ferrell, who shot an excellent +11 (83). He was able to finish fourth with this score. Right behind Ferrell was senior Hudson Rector, who also had a solid round. He finished with a +14 (86), which placed him sixth out of all competitors.
Senior Mathew Garnett was next for Pratt. He ended up placing seventeenth with a +28 on the day. Following him was sophomore Quinton Humble, who also shot a +28. Lastly, Landyn Sparks rounded out things for Pratt, as he shot a +36.
With these scores, the Greenbacks collectively shot +54 as a team. This was eight strokes lower than the next team, Cheney, so Pratt was crowned as the team champions of their annual home invitational.
The team looked to carry this early momentum into their next tournament. This was on Monday, April 7, when the team traveled to play at Crazy Horse Golf Club for the Nickerson Varsity Invitational.
Here, the squad had another solid day of golf. McAtee ended up finishing runner-up with a +4 final score, which was only one behind the first place golfer. Next, Ferrell competed well for Pratt. He finished with a +13, which put him in ninth place.
Humble was next for the Greenbacks. He ended up shooting +24, which put him in twenty-fourth place individually. Sparks finished his day with a +29, putting him in thirty-eighth. Lastly, Garnett and Rector placed forty-second and forty-fifth with scores of +30 and +31 respectively.
With these results, the Greenbacks ended up shooting a +70 as a team. This was good enough give them a podium finish in third, only losing to Hutchinson Trinity Catholic and Hutch Central Christian.
The team now looks to its next contest, which will fall on Tuesday, April 15, when the varsity team will travel to Kingman to play in their invitational. There, the Greenbacks will look to finish with multiple top placers and another tournament championship title.
