During the beginning of the 2024 school year, the Tri-County Tribune began what has become a popular feature – selecting an Athlete of the Week each week from high school teams in the Tri-County Tribune coverage area. This is the first week of our Winter 2024-25 sports selections and as always, nominations made by email to jstultz@cherryroad.com are given serious consideration. Congratulations to the following athletes for their efforts and dedication which has resulted in this week’s recognition. We will continue this feature, sponsored by the City of Pratt, throughout the winter sports season. Check out the Sports tab on the Tri-County Tribune website to see all the winners from the fall 2024 sports season, and to find the new winners each week during the winter at www.tricountytribune.news.
Brock Deterding – Kiowa County High School boys basketball
Kiowa County High School’s Brock Deterding had the hot hand in the Maverick’s season opener last Friday, December. Deterding knocked in 33 points to lead his team to an 86-56 win over South Barbar. All of Deterding’s points came from the field with 9 being 2-fers and 5 from behind the three-point line. Congratulations to Deterding for winning our opening Winter Week 1 Tri-County Tribune Athlete of the Week nod!
Lydia Reed – St. John Hudson High School girls basketball
St. John HS Girls defeated Stafford 89-9 Friday in their home opener. While it was a complete team effort, Lydia Reed, a 6-foot-2 post player for the Lady Tigers, led all scorers with 20 points. Reed is coming off a standout fall volleyball season and is committed to Fort Hays State University for basketball. Congratulations for a great season start and to Lydia Reed for topping the Tri-County Tribune female Athlete of the Week list for week 1!
