With the start of the 2022-23 basketball season near, the Pratt High School Greenbacks have been hard at work preparing for varsity competition. Head Coach Chris Battin said this will be an exciting year for his team, and he has already established his goals for the season.
The Skyline High School boys’ basketball team is looking to progress on a solid season from last year. Head Coach Hagen Turner has expressed his excitement for this team, and he is preparing the boys every day in practice for what should be a successful season.
Kiowa County High School is fielding a young boys basketball team this year, but Coach Matt Hoffman already has a pretty good idea who will be stepping up to lead the Mavericks. “Brady Deterding is our only senior with varsity experience and is looking to lead our team this year,” Hoffman said.
Head Coach of the Macksville High School boys basketball team Jeff Kuckelman is looking at about the best possible starting lineup as he has had in 21 years of very successful coaching at the 1A level of high school basketball.
Pratt, Kan. – The Pratt Community College Beavers wrapped up their non-conference schedule November 12 with a big win in front a quiet crowd at Lesh Arena. The Kansas Wesleyan ( JV) Coyotes were in town to do battle with the Beavers.
More than 90 area kids took part in Pratt Wrestling Club‘s annual wrestling clinic last week which culminated in a tournament of sorts on Saturday. The youth wrestling clinic, put on in conjunction with Pratt Recreation Center, facilitated four practice sessions for beginning wrestlers, and then a skills exhibition showcase.
Pratt, Kan. - As the calendar page turned to November so did the start of the Beaver basketball season. The Pratt Community College women’s basketball team wasted no time in getting their season started tonight, November 1st against Otero College. The Rattlers of Otero came out strong in the first quarter by putting up 30 points and taking a ten-point lead into the second quarter 30-20. The Beavers didn’t let Otero’s quick start stop them from making a run of their own. By the five-minute mark of the second quarter Pratt had pulled it within three 33-30. At halftime time Otero lead 45-41.
Flying high into post-season 8-man football with an 8-0 record, it looked like the Macksville Mustangs would take their success all the way to state. But last Friday this solid team encountered the perfect storm, a combination of bad weather and a powerful Rawlins County team, and Macksville was stunned with a 46-0 season- ending loss. “Well our offense is a spread look with a lot of moving parts and the muddy mess we played in deterred everything we were trying to do in that regard,” said head coach Kyle Bright. “We lost our starting tailback to a broken arm the week before and we didn’t replace him very well. Rawlins County was a physical team that liked to run the ball downhill and we didn’t respond well. My hats off to their effort and their intensity. They outplayed us in every single facet of the game.”
In a game that was moved up a day to avoid predicted bad weather, the Pratt High School football team saw their season come to an early end in a post-season rematch with nemesis Andale. The Greenbacks one lonely touchdown, a completed pass to senior Justus Tatro, with 7:19 left in the 4th quarter that ended Andale 45 Pratt 6.
This past week was a strong kick off for both levels of Pratt High School scholar’s bowl teams. Coaches Kyle Farmer and Farrah Schmidt said there were strong individual performances, as well as matches that required grit among the whole team.
