COVID-19 hit Kiowa County hard during the month of October causing numerous quarantines and sick days for people employed at the Kiowa County Courthouse and USD 422 Kiowa County schools. Students and families from the local schools were also affected with stay-at-home orders and continuous health updates.
The staff and guests of the 1st Annual Quilt Show hosted by Sandyland Shepherd's Center agreed that the quilt show was a success, according to organizer Martha Cutright, co-executive director of Sandyland Shepherd's Center in St. John.
The food freezers at Kiowa County Senior Center went from almost completely empty to overflowing this week, thanks to some good-hearted donors in the area. "We would like to thank Kevin and Steve Heft and all their helpers who raised the two animals they donated to us at the senior center.
Pratt Musical Expressions concerts are free and open to the public and have been presented locally over the past five years, with a break recently due to the global pandemic, according to organizer Duane Hanks. On October 24, this sometime concert series returned with a beautiful showcase of the musical talent within the Pratt community after a hiatus of over a year and a half.
The Country Trailblazers 4-H Club met September 20 and elected officers. Taking leadership positions this year are Reporter Aaron Lucas, Vice President Clayton Freeman, Treasurer Brett Atteberry, President Wiley Atteberry, Secretary Grace Swindler and Recreation Leader Kinley Freeman.
The Kiowa County Senior Center would like to thank Heft & Sons for donating two whole beeves and John Unruh for donating a whole beef to the center! We truly appreciate any donation, but right now it is almost impossible to get beef through our vendor. We have also had several donations of beef by the pound and monetary donations to pay for processing, etc. This should last us quite some time and help to make many nutritious meals for the senior citizens of Kiowa County. Thank you to everyone who has donated in any way!!
The USD 382 Board of Education meeting on October 11 focused on a variety of changes in staff and in continued COVID response. The meeting was kicked off by a couple of students enrolled in the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program, an enrichment program provided by the district.
When Jeanette Klamm’s sons graduated from Basehor-Linwood High School, it left her with some unexpected time on her hands. Always being active including serving as a USD 458 Board of Education member, Glenwood 4-H club leader, as well as other activities related to her children, Klamm began making plans to build a cut flower maze in her backyard. She was inspired by a gentleman in her Nebraska hometown who built a flower maze and opened it as an agritourism destination.
Near dawn on Monday, two young water buffalo, a heifer and a bull, roamed far from home. They found a rip in the fence that a few deer had caused, and ran across a somewhat busy country blacktop.
Just about everyone in Preston came out for that community's third annual Harvest Fest on Saturday. Additional guests from near and far joined the locals in taking advantage of a beautiful fall day to enjoy games, vendors, chili and other treats at the small, eastern Pratt County town.
