McKinney wins overwhelming support for hospital board position

Unofficial November 2, 2021 Kiowa County election results are posted online at kiowacounty.org, but a quick peek into totals reveals some interesting races for local leadership positions. Dennis McKinney overwhelming won support for a position on the Kiowa County Hospital Board with 364 votes, but there were write-ins from all corners of the county for Chad Pore and eight other individuals.

Art center is a drawing card for tourists and publicity seekers

Kansas Lt. Gov. David Toland recently made a special visit last Thursday to the newly christened M.T. Liggett Art Environment Visitors Center in Mullinville. This was a first-time visit for Toland who carefully viewed the exhibits and asked many questions about how and when M.T. developed his gift for metal sculpting using junk metal parts in his workshop starting about 1989.

Area youth are learning how to get jobs, and keep them

Kathleen Norman, Assistant Director of Stafford County Economic Development, has an office in St. John at 311 N. Broadway, but lately she has been getting out to surrounding communities to facilitate Empowerment Training with the Jobs of America’s Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) Program. She will wrap up a nine-week pilot session at Stafford High School in early December that has been keeping her busy for several weeks now.

B-29 Museum in Pratt now home to WWII soldier’s war-time watch

A watch arrived at the B-29 Bombers on the Prairie Museum in Pratt for safe-keeping two weeks ago. It no longer has a military issued band, it couldn't be relied upon to keep accurate time, though the second hand was still functioning. However, this watch was a special time piece, or rather a piece of time, because it carried with it memories from WWII lived by the person who wore it. This Bulova watch came to Pratt because it needed to be placed with other memorabilia from WWII so others could listen and read it's story to remember and learn what happened during the war years of 1944 and 1945.

Seniors celebrate Monday supper with warm soup in St. John

Twenty-one Seniors enjoyed an evening of warm soup, complimentary side dishes and desert on a chilly 1st of the month Monday Senior Supper. Thank you to Velda Young, Carolyn Mix, Deanna Williamson and Dean Delp and Sandy Smith for the soup. Also thank you to all who attended and brought delish side dishes. Rebecca McDaniel completed our warm and happy evening with piano music that brought back wonderful memories.
