MISS KANSAS ORGANIZATION

The Miss Southern Kansas Pageant is back in Greensburg after an 18-year hiatus. The 2022 event was hosted at the Twilight Theater and Community auditorium on January 22, with three titles up for grabs: Miss Southern Plains 2022, Miss Southern Kansas 2022 and Miss Kiowa County 2022. After competitions in talent, interview and evening wear, respective title winners were Ayanna Hensley as Miss Kiowa County, Emily Rugg as Miss Southern Kansas and Kaycee Krell as Miss Southern Plains. This competition is a vital preliminary to the Miss Kansas and Miss America competitions that occur later this year.

Winter weather causes accidents, round two scheduled to hit Tuesday

Winter weather blasted into Kansas last Tuesday with snowfall amounts totaling over 20 inches in some parts of the state. Pratt County dodged double-digit totals but still recorded 4 to 5 inches on the far western side of the county and 3 inches three miles west-northwest of Preston, according to the U.S. National Weather Service at Dodge City.

COVID-19 surge remains challenge, as state has 8th highest rate of new cases

As the nation’s top infectious disease specialist expressed optimism amid the omicron surge, Kansas doctors continue to warn of challenges hospitals face amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported 14,270 new COVID-19 cases, 71 new hospitalizations and 17 new deaths over the weekend.

Mass testing site open in Pratt

During the January 24 meeting of Pratt County Commission, Director of the Pratt County Health Department Darcie Van Der Vyver reported to the commissioners that the Kansas National Guard is assisting Pratt County with the operation of a COVID-19 mass testing site. This site has been established in the Pratt Community Building located at 619 N. Main Street. The National Guard will be on site until February 24 with operating hours between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Illness causes short staffing

On January 18, the Kiowa County Health Department reported to Kiowa County commissioners that they are currently short-staffed due to illness. Despite this problem, COVID testing is going well. They are testing 15-20 residents each day and have 85 test kits on hand. There is a Nationwide testing supply shortage. Test kits are not available from the government or for purchase.
