Walmart defies groundhog outlook on spring

The official verdict of a groundhog’s judgment may have indicated there would be six more weeks of spring after February 2, 2025, but Walmart employees in Pratt have not taken that advice seriously. A special ribbon cutting ceremony for the store’s garden center took place on Friday, March 21, kicking off special deals on many select items pertaining to gardening, outdoor lawn care, and fun in the sun.

Winter storm leaves a fine mess in Sawyer

Three years ago a summer storm caused the roof of the high school gym in Sawyer to cave in, destroying a community gathering place and part of the home of Patsy Aubley-Janzen. This year, on Tuesday, March 18, another storm with 70+ mph wind gusts spitting snow balls every which way blew out the southern wall of the Sawyer School gym. Bricks exploded across the south lawn of the former schoolyard and across Lorraine Street, some of them reaching the yard of Leon McCullough who lives on the other side.

Program to celebrate rural entrepreneurs

ST. JOHN – St. John Homecoming Hall & Museum in St. John will host “Ruralpreneurs: Tumbleweeds and Talents in Kansas Communities,” a presentation and discussion by Ron Wilson on Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m. The museum is located at 304 N. Main in St. John, right next to Tiger Town Pizza. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. The program is the third in the George and Clara Mae Highfill Lecture Series, and it is made possible by Humanities Kansas.
