Kiowa County Commissioners met in a regular session on Monday, May 16, 2022. Their general business items began with the approval of a Consent Agenda and financial signatures. Also, a written report of the recent insurance inspection for the county’s buildings was reviewed, followed by the notice that a K-Camp representative will be attending the next meeting of county department heads to schedule defensive driving training.
TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly signed bipartisan legislation Thursday creating incentives in the form of state income tax credits for investors in construction of residential housing that contributes to economic development in Kansas.
USD 350 Residential Carpentry class students are remodeling a house located at 611 N. Broadway in St. John, under the direction of Adam Moritz, Carpentry Instructor. The students started by getting OSHA-10 Certification cards.
Tom Gehring of Weisenhorn, Germany and Jaycee Patton of Medicine Lodge were named Barton Community College’s 2022 Outstanding Graduates. Dean of Student Services Angie Maddy recognized them as part of Barton’s commencement on Friday.
The USD 382 Board of Education met on Monday, May 9 to discuss a variety of matters. These ranged from activity updates to out of state trip requests, as well as personnel changes for the district.
Several purchases and presentations were discussed at Skyline Schools’ Monday, May 5th Board of Education meeting. The first of these was a presentation by teacher Taylor Stratford and a couple of her students. They proposed a new school business, called “The Beakery”. This business would be a school café where students could get a variety of snacks. If approved, this business would be put in effect during the 2022-23 school year.
Pratt High School world language students participated in national exams for French and Spanish earlier in March this year. Results from both the National Spanish Exam and the French Grand Concours National Exam were recently published.
Haviland City Council convened in regular session on Wednesday, May 11, with the agenda docket full of items. Council president Steve Larsh opened the meeting with prayer, followed by the council’s approvals on previous meeting minutes and current monthly expenses.
Armed Forces Day [AFD] is observed each year on the third Saturday in May. It is the designated day Americans celebrate their armed defenses and pay tribute to those serving in all military branches. Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of AFD on August 31, 1949, to replace separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Days and unify the armed forces under one agency, the U. S. Department of Defense. Each of the named branches adopted the newly formed AFD in place of their own celebration; albeit, the Marine Corps declined to drop their day of observance but still participates in AFD (U.S.).
A few days of cooler temperatures and actual moisture falling to the ground had many in Pratt County feeling thankful, along with the birds and other outdoors creatures. But rainfall totals didn’t amount to much, and by the following Monday, temperatures soared to near 100 degrees as the reality of life in the Gateway to the High Plains set back in.
