It’s time to plug the pool drain

Pratt’s current municipal swimming pool, which has served the community for 90 years, is rapidly approaching the end of its useful life. This is not news to the Pratt City Commission, but as Public Works Director Russ Rambat explained at the commission’s May 16 meeting, it is time for a new pool.

Dick Anderson Greenback Memorial Fund established in remembrance of ‘The Voice of the Greenbacks’

Dick Anderson, 76, of Pratt died unexpectedly May 12, 2022 after a brief struggle with esophageal cancer. As Sports Director for the local KMMM1290 radio station, Anderson could be counted on to do all the sports broadcasting for the Pratt community as requested. He was quickly tokened the name “The Voice of the Greenbacks.”

SJN Bank of Kansas donates building to USD 350 for daycare facility

The SJN Bank of Kansas has allowed USD 350 to use the building located at 205 East Fourth in St. John rent-free for the last three years for the Parents-as-Teachers program. The bank has now officially donated the building to the school and paperwork will be filed in the Register of Deeds Office this week. The building will open as a daycare in August following remodeling.

This year’s Kentucky Derby had some Kiowa County connections

When the start bell rang at the 2022 running of the Kentucky Derby last week, some Kiowa County connections were discovered. Ruth Hoeme McFarland, the owner of the Crazy Mule Restaurant in Greensburg and her daughter, Adrien McFarland, who often helps at the Crazy Mule or volunteers at the Kiowa County Care and Share store, attended the Kentucky Derby this year, representing Kansas and even Kiowa County at the annual event.
