Land of the free because of the brave

Every summer we look forward to July fourth because it’s filled with fun things to do, like barbecuing, picnics, games, family gatherings, camping, and fireworks. And of course, for many it’s a paid holiday which is always nice. However, along with the celebrations, there is also a solemn awareness of those who have served and sacrificed for our country so that we can enjoy our freedom. Independence Day focuses on the courage of many Americans who fought against Great Britain in the Revolutionary War and with much blood-shed declared the victory and helped establish this great nation. On July fourth, 1776, the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, declared the sovereignty of the United States of America as they signed the Declaration of Independence which is recognized as our nations birthday.

Saferoom Project updates top Skyline Board of Education Meeting in June

On Monday, June 27th, the USD 438 Board of Education met to discuss several new updates and other sorts of information. The meeting was kicked off with a report by the superintendent, Becca Flowers. This included updates on legislative and financial news. Flowers also noted that the Skyline campus will be closed to activities that were not scheduled on Friday – Sunday. This included both student and adult activity.

Gillig grant supports nonprofit learning opportunities

South Central Community Foundation (SCCF) is excited to announce the new grant opportunity for Pratt County nonprofits called the Marjorie Gillig Grant. This grant, created by a gift from Marjorie’s estate, will help support projects or programs impacting the following areas: Music and Arts, Primary Education, Senior Activities, Community Organizations, Church Programs, or Mission Trips.

City leaders approve new venue for Pratt’s Oktoberfest

This year, Pratt’s annual Oktoberfest will be held at Lemon Park instead of at the Green Sports Complex as in its previous four years. Three of the event’s organizers, Jackie Mundt, Dakota Holtgrieve, and Scott Goodheart presented their reasons for the change of venue to the Pratt City Board of Commissioners at its July 5th meeting. Mayor Deeds was not able to be present at the meeting as he was in the hospital.
