College student finds possible ancient elephant tusk

Jakob O’Brien of Alva, Oklahoma found a possible elephant tusk when he went home for Thanksgiving break last month. It wasn’t until he brought his findings back to Haviland where he is a youth ministry student at Barclay College to get help from the local creation science expert, Dr. Jerry Simmons at the Heart of America Science Museum, that he realized how exciting this find of his might be.

Iuka celebrates Christmas in style

With just over 150 residents in the City of Iuka, one might not think there is not much to do or celebrate at Christmas. But that would be wrong. Mayor Marsha Giggy and more two dozen fellow Iukans, plus more who came and went throughout the morning, gathered Saturday, December 10 at The Lunchroom Cafe to celebrate Christmas and connect with each other while having some good old-fashioned holiday fun.

Christmas trees now available at Delps

Delp Tree Farm is a third generation family-owned business in St. John, Kansas. Delp Tree Farm began in 1959 by Cecil and Ruby Delp. Since that time Tony and Linda Delp, and Joel and Sarah Delp have carried on the family tradition. Delp Tree farm opened for the Christmas season November 25. Their hours are Monday through Friday from 1-6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1-6 p.m.

Christmas goodies still available from Whisked Away Baked Goods in Pratt

The big rush of preparation for the Gamma Beta Craft Fair is over, but Morgan Schmidt of Whisked Away Baked Goods is still making, selling, and delivering, special baked items for Christmas. Schmidt, whose day job is at Liberty Middle School as a district paraprofessional, said she made 9 dozen sugar cookies and 10 dozen other cookies for the recent vendor/craft show in Pratt.

Grant helps Haviland gardening crew get ready for next growing season

The City of Haviland has recently been able to purchase a garden tiller for the Haviland Community Garden Crew because of a grant from South Central Community Foundation (SCCF) along with other contributions from people in the Haviland area. Charles Smith, one of the leaders in overseeing the Haviland Garden Crew recently began using the tiller to prepare the soil for next year’s garden.

Greensburg Ranger gear shows up at senior center birthday celebration

Kiowa County Senior Center participants Max and Joleen SeaCat have lived up the place a bit with their old Ranger gear collection. Before there were Kiowa County High School Mavericks, there were Greensburg Rangers. Max taught school in Greensburg for many, many years, an so on the fourth Friday of each month (which has always been our “Birthdays, Burgers, and Bingo” time) and we recently added to that that they wear their Ranger Gear.
