Master Gardener Tips: It’s time to plant potatoes

Actually any time from mid- to late-March is fine for potato planting. Be sure to buy seed potatoes rather than using those bought for cooking. Seed potatoes are certified disease free and have plenty of starch to sprout as quickly as soil temperatures allow. Most seed potatoes can be cut into four pieces, though large potatoes may yield more, and small less. Each seed piece should be between 1.5 and 2 ounces. Seed pieces this size will have more than one eye.

Kansas FFA Foundation breaks day of giving record

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas FFA Foundation is thrilled to announce the incredible success of Give FFA Day 2025, held on Thursday, February 20. Thanks to the generosity of nearly 400 donors, the Foundation raised over $59,000 in just 24 hours, making this the most successful Give FFA Day in Kansas history. Kansas also ranked third nationally in state giving, highlighting the widespread support for agricultural education and FFA programs. Previously, the record was $23,000.

Soil conservation group plans local meeting

The Pratt Management Unit – Pratt, Barber, Stafford, Kiowa and Comanche County Conservation Districts will be hosting a Local Working Group (LWG) meeting on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Stafford County Annex 210 E 3rd Ave, St John, Kansas. A light lunch will be served. The purpose of this meeting is to make recommendations to the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist related to addressing natural resource concerns at local level.

Carbon intensity scores and webinars offered

Continuum Ag has issued verified Carbon Intensity (CI) Certificates to farmers who completed the first-ever CI Certification audit process. These official Certificates represent low carbon footprint bushels of corn and are available for farmers to sell into participating markets. The intent is that verified low-carbon bushels, and associated CI Certificates, will earn farmers premiums via the emerging 45Z tax credit program or similar private sector markets. This inaugural audit resulted in over 29 million verified CI Certificates representing family farms across the United States.
