When is war justified?

Russia’s recent military advance on Ukraine seems to have thrust our nation into an ethical dilemma. Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that modern Ukraine is entirely the product of the Soviet era and has no independent legitimacy (Dickinson). Putin justifies the invasion by claiming that America’s imperialism in Europe threatens his nation’s security and brainwashed the people of the former Russian-held territory with empty words of democracy, eventually stealing the region through a fixed election (Fisher). So, when is military aggression against a sovereign nation justified, and should the United States send troops into Ukraine? Those are the questions being asked today, are they not?

Wild at Heart Bees promotes land co-existence, pure products

Wild at Heart Bees, locally owned by Tom and Pam Turner, started their business in 2017. Tom and his family build everything from the bee boxes to the frames. Their son, Trey, builds the boxes and daughter-in-law, Amber, wires the frames for the boxes. Last winter 1,500 frames were made so that 150 hives could be put out. Most of the lumber is purchased from St. John Lumber. Tom showed a frame filled with honey and explained that a frame weighs approximately 10 pounds prior to harvesting. Wild at Heart Bees began with 10 hives in 2017 and they have grown to the 150 hives that are out at this time.

Former standout leads Skyline Middle School girls to league championship title

The Skyline Middle School girls basketball team led by first-year coach Sam Fisher, who is a former Thunderbird roundball standout, traveled to Kiowa last week to compete in the Heart of the Plains League Tournament. Their regular season record placed them firmly in the number two seed position where they faced off against Burrton in first round play on Saturday, 2/5. The Thunderbirds were victorious and moved on to challenge a pumpedup Attica team on Monday, the 7th. The Bulldogs were fresh off a win over the hometeam of South Barber. Skyline came out on top by playing their hallmark tough and smothering defense and pressing throughout. On the other side of the bracket, Norwich moved handily through to face the T-birds in the championship game. Norwich was previously undefeated in league play and handed Skyline their only loss of the regular season. The table was set for a revenge game and Thunderbirds went in with their usual confidence and fear-nothing attitude.

Do we have transparency and trust in Topeka?

Ordinary life in the United States today is regularly shaped by all sorts of complicated corporate, governmental, and bureaucratic systems. For some, the way to hold onto the ideal of ordinary citizens truly governing themselves despite this complexity, is “transparency.”
