Students earn top awards at tech fair

Fort Hays State University hosted its 63rd annual technology fair for Kansas high school students at the end of April, inviting them to come and present their various technical achievements. It was held at the Gross Memorial Coliseum and any student from grades 6-12 who studies under a certified stem or industrial arts teacher is eligible to submit their work to be showcased. Many local Kiowa County High School students participated, winning accolades for their work accomplished this school year under the direction of teacher Peter Kerns.

Great Kansas Fishing Derby returns for second year

PRATT – An angler’s prized catch may actually be worth a prize this spring and summer in Kansas, thanks to the return of the Great Kansas Fishing Derby. This year’s Derby will run May 15 to September 15, 2022. During that time, anglers can try their luck at catching one of more than 500 specially tagged fish located in public waterbodies across the Sunflower State. The statewide competition is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Kansas Wildscape Foundation, Bass Pro-Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Kansas State Fair, Firewater Music Festival, City of Independence, and many local retailers.

Rain and heat characterize the beginning of May

A few days of cooler temperatures and actual moisture falling to the ground had many in Pratt County feeling thankful, along with the birds and other outdoors creatures. But rainfall totals didn’t amount to much, and by the following Monday, temperatures soared to near 100 degrees as the reality of life in the Gateway to the High Plains set back in.

Commencement brings new beginnings

As the final days of school come to a close, we have a lot of activities planned: banquets, concerts, awards assemblies, field trips, and sports events. For many kids, the countdown to the end of school has begun. The class of 2022 is looking forward to their upcoming commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m. in the main gym.

Local seniors share news and events

The Monthly Pot Luck Supper for Sunflower Senior Center was held May 2 in St. John. Fifteen seniors enjoyed the program by Sister Paulynn Instenes, who shared “Lessons I Learned from my Students” while teaching in locations including Wisconsin, Guam, Mississippi, and Zimbabwe, Africa. Every month we enjoy the delicious food each person in attendance brings to share. There are many excellent cooks in the group.

Car problems? Troy Fisher can help

Troy Fisher has been the owner of Fisher Service Center for two years; however, he has been working there for the last 17 years. Fisher Service Center, St. John, Kansas, was established in 1988 by Troy’s father, Larry Fisher. Troy is a life-long St. John resident. He is the one employee in the building that answers calls, schedules appointments, orders and replaces parts, and takes payments. Troy’s wife, Alisa, does the bookkeeping.
