Don’t get caught up with the crowd

Many problems we have could be avoided or minimized if more people refused to follow the crowd. Group behavior often instills fear and panic as it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Regardless of reality, the crowd is lead with false premises. They then behave as if what they are being told is true. As a result, their actions transform the alleged circumstances into reality.

A season of change: Live by faith

A letter to my daughter celebrating the third anniversary of her college graduation this month! Did you ever wonder what your kid was doing?? Wonder why they were making the choices they were making?? Well here is a little of our story I wrote to my daughter in 2019!

The toad abode

There’s just something about a toad that “conjures” up visions of a witch in a huge black hat with a big hairy wart on her nose mumbling spells as she stirs a bubbling pot full of potion. Toads just look creepy, and then of course there is that propensity they possess to pee on anyone picking them up. Despite having a face only a mother could love, toads are extremely important to our planet. It is reported that a toad can eat ten thousand insects in one summer and are a big part of natures pest patrol (the person who did the counting for that study really needs a life!)

Weltmer is more than a neighbor in beef country

Kansas beef producers are no strangers to adversity. They deal with Mother Nature, meat substitutes and industry misconceptions; however, they do not fight alone. We have allies in each other and in our agriculture checkoff counterparts. These partnerships amplify the Beef Checkoff programs that increase demand for beef.

Worship God, not the Bible

For many people of faith, there is a great love of the Bible – and for good reason! The Bible is a treasure trove of stories about God interacting with humanity, it is a rich resource for learning how our ancestors in the faith made difficult decisions, it contains beloved prayers, it is the source of many of our favorite words of hope, and it makes freely available teachings that have benefitted the entire world. I give thanks to God for this good book! Do you as well?

Environmental Resources Class takes fish samples along the Arkansas River

On April 25, 2022, Joel Delp took the Environmental Resources class on a trip to the Arkansas River in Great Bend. Here, the class collected, identified, and released several species of fish. The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism was kind enough to invite the class to help them with research. Aside from the education factor, the overall goal of the trip was to observe the diversity of native and non-native fish species. As it is known, several unwanted species of fish reside in the rivers, streams, and lakes of Kansas. For instance, the Common Carp (Cryprinus carpio) is prevalent in bodies of water all over the U.S. The KDWP’s primary plan is to reduce invasive species populations and ensure the health of local fauna. Along with that, the department has plans to reintroduce species to different habitats. One such species was stocked in the Arkansas River: the Plains Minnow (Hybognathus placitus). As part of a conservation effort, the Plains Minnow is being introduced into different bodies of water. During the trip, however, the class did not find any Plains Minnows in the Arkansas River. In an optimistic view, that does not mean the stocking was a failure.
