Outdoor picnic celebrates 135 years of service in Pratt

The Peoples Bank celebrated 135 years of service on Friday with a special outdoor picnic lunch for the community at the corner of Third and Main streets last Friday in Pratt. Colorful canopies filled the blocked-off street providing shade for those who stopped by for a free lunch and visiting with bank employees, as well as neighbors and friends.

Getting stronger and faster

Summer activities for middle and high school at USD 382 began this week with summer weights, speed camps and football workouts. The PHS weight room is now busy Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with Greenback athletes looking to stronger and faster for the coming fall sports seasons.

Ghost gun ban dies in committee

National attention has turned, once again, to the gun debate following the horrific events at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas last month. One day prior to the school shooting that killed 19 children and 2 adults, the Kansas legislature adjourned without taking action on proposed bills aimed to ban so called “ghost guns”, like the one used in the shooting at Olathe East High School in March of this year.

Hensley credits difficult upbringing, faith in God and helpful connections for success on the 2022 Miss Kansas stage

Miss Kansas 2022 Ayan- na Hensley is a Dodge City resident with Greensburg connections, a Rudd Scholar and 2022 Fort Hays State University graduate with a major in biology and a minor in creative writing. The Miss Kiowa County candidate is an accomplished athlete, student and a person of deep faith. But she didn’t come from a typical family background with a predestined penchant for success. She had to fight her way through childhood abuse, trauma and poverty. It’s something she is not ashamed to talk about, and something she feels has prepared her to be in the best position now, as Miss Kansas 2022, to reach out to others and lift them up through difficulties to be the best they can be.

People encouraged to get outdoors and explore forests this summer

Coinciding with National Get Outdoors Day on June 11, the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council has announced new public service advertisements (PSAs) from the Discover the Forest campaign. The new creative brings in the power of music with an original song, “Outside,” made especially for the campaign by Poe Leos and Harv. The campaign includes new video assets, along with a music video that shows a family discovering nature together, reminding parents how enriching and exciting connecting with nature can be.

The education elephant is still in the room

The Kansas legislative year ended in a stalemate for culture warriors and without any major legislation for overall improvement of teaching and learning, because none of the bills addressed the elephant in the middle of the room—a shortage of fully prepared teachers.
