The 34th annual Poetry Rendezvous will be Aug. 6 and 7 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library, 406 N. Monroe, St. John. This is an informal “come-and-go” event. Friends of poetry are welcome to come and read, or simply come and listen for as long or short as they like. Poets will have books available to sell and autograph. All events are free.

It was late in the morning of the last day of the 2022 Pratt County Fair, but the stands were still packed with business representatives and families Saturday when the last lot came into the 4-H Livestock Premium Auction. As Haley Spitzer walked her late brother Daniel Spitzer’s market steer up, she was followed by Spitzer family members and their closest friends. Then all the 4-Hers in attendance (many in #LiveLikeDaniel t-shirts) gathered around the sale ring, and the auctioneer began his sing-song sales chant. Numerous hands flew in the air to buy Daniel Spitzer’s steer, sharing in the recent tragedy that took Spitzer’s life just a few short weeks earlier. The result was a positive boost that no one could have predicted.
The Kiowa County Free Fair is taking place this week in Greensburg. Events started on Saturday, July 16 at the Triangle Rodeo Grounds. The usual events followed with livestock and building check-ins on Monday, July 18 and a pedal tractor pull that evening. Tuesday, July 19, brought the swine show in the morning, a 4:30 p.m. fashion review, and the beef show in the evening. Wednesday event headlines included Kids Day events, sheep and goat shows, and a Ranch Rodeo in the evening. Thursday plans include cinnamon rolls, round robin livestock showmanship, the annual 4-H livestock auction and a watermelon feed. On Friday it’s all over after the 9 a.m. to noon cleanup time.
For every age division from 8-14 years old, there is a Pratt summer baseball team. This summer, all of them competed extremely well in their tournaments, while also building unforgettable bonds with each other.
Pioneers are those who take the first steps into the unknown, paving the way for others to follow. Even in 2022, there are pioneers here in Pratt County, like Mark Fincham, who is the first person to plant hemp as a legal, commercial crop.
