America in recession

*Note: Each month I want to provide you with regular updates about what’s going on in our nation’s capital and throughout the 4th District of Kansas. Here’s what happened in July.

The Kansas Supreme Court rules that police can be liable when their actions injure a bystander

Charges can proceed against an officer who injured an innocent bystander while defending themself TOPEKA, Kansas — The Kansas Supreme Court reversed a lower court decision Friday that shielded a Wichita police officer from criminal charges when he shot at a dog and a young girl was injured.

Don’t be afraid to take the plunge

First Southern Baptist Church, Pratt Not long ago I shared a thought with our congregation that I’d like to share with you here. Many of you know that for many years, my family and I lived and served as missionaries in the beautiful Zambezi River Valley. I still take a group of volunteers back each year for an annual short-term mission trip. One of the most fascinating features of the region that we travel to is the majestic Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is classified as the largest waterfall in the world, based on its combined with of 5,604 feet (over a mile wide) and it’s height of 354 feet. It figures to be the largest sheet of falling water in the entire world. At the edge of the falls, near Livingstone Island, during the river’s lowest flow, there is a rock barrier that forms an eddy with minimal current, allowing adventurous swimmers to splash around in relative safety only a few feet from where the water cascades over the falls. The place is called “The Devil’ Pool.” But, would you be willing to take a plunge there? (I remind you; it is a very dangerous place and there have been occasional deaths reported in that location. In fact, no one has ever survived, who slipped, lost their footing, and who has gone over the falls. To lose your footing there, seems to mean certain death. Even elephants caught in the current above the falls have been unable to escape, and they, too, have plunged to their deaths. A young boy read about one of these untimely tragedies and made this statement. “I would never go near that place. In fact, I’d never even get in the river!”

The eagle who believed he was a chicken

Once there was a young eaglet that accidentally fell from the safety of his nest high on the mountain. Miraculously, he fell in a patch of soft grass and survived. He stumbled out into the open and a farmer saw him and brought him to the farm and placed him inside a chicken coop with all the other chickens. Since the eagle had not yet discovered his true identity, he started watching the other birds and naturally followed their habits and doing what they did. So many people have been wrongly influenced by trying to be like others and for some it has ruined their lives. He was growing stronger and more beautiful every day, but he had not yet discovered the revelation of who he was and what he was called to be.

It’s not crazy to follow God

When Jeff and I first started dating, needless to say, we were young and stupid. (Perhaps that is why we are still together) we were just 13 and 16 yrs old. After 43 years of knowing him, the other day he told me “You are so crazy!” as we were joking around. I responded “ Well maybe that is why I am still here”
