PCC women’s basketball holds on for 83-82 thriller

Pratt, Kan. - As the calendar page turned to November so did the start of the Beaver basketball season. The Pratt Community College women’s basketball team wasted no time in getting their season started tonight, November 1st against Otero College. The Rattlers of Otero came out strong in the first quarter by putting up 30 points and taking a ten-point lead into the second quarter 30-20. The Beavers didn’t let Otero’s quick start stop them from making a run of their own. By the five-minute mark of the second quarter Pratt had pulled it within three 33-30. At halftime time Otero lead 45-41.

KDWP staff successfully re-introduce threatened fish species

PRATT – As election workers tear down and pack up polling stations, and coffee shops bustle with side conversations about the future of The Sunflower State, one small-but-mighty “candidate” is quietly entering a race of its own – a race to re-establish its kind as a thriving species in Kansas waters. And thanks to the aid of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Fisheries and Ecological Services staff, the campaign of the Plains Minnow is off to a promising start.

The Great Coon’ Bait Caper

When it comes to eating habits, raccoons are a lot like teenage boys; they’ll eat anything that smells good, and a lot of things that don’t. There are people raking in the dough selling custom baked pet treats, so this year after the Kansas Fur Harvesters convention, I opened the Gilliland Coon’ Bait Test Kitchen, intent on dazzling the trapping world with my coon bait creations.

Fall is good time for power equipment maintenance

Storing Power Equipment for the Winter Late fall or early winter is a good time to service power equipment such as mowers, tillers and garden tractors. Run the equipment out of gas or treat the existing gas with a stabilizer as untreated gas can deteriorate over time.

Going broke on percentage

Last week I wrote about some of the problems of getting paid by mileage. What about being paid by percentage? You might want to sit down for this one.

Forgotten people and things

Those of you who follow this blog are well acquainted with Isaac Werner, a once forgotten man whom many of you now know well, whether through reading “Prairie Bachelor” or by following this blog or by attending one of my book talks. Except as a name on a genealogy chart, until I began my research, even his family had forgotten Isaac. Perhaps his life would have remained unknown had he not kept a journal, and but for my curiosity about my own family, would anyone else have picked up his 480 page journal and discovered its priceless content?
