An arctic blast dubbed Winter Storm Elliott hit the High Plains and much of the central United States the week of Christmas, causing many to adjust holiday plans. For those living in Pratt County, Kansas, it was just a part of life to deal with as below zero temperatures and dangerous wind chills were part of a system that caused power outages and hit the Pratt area December 21-23. A -7 temperature was recorded at the Peoples Bank Building just after 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Area weather stations predicted -30 and -40 degree wind chills for Wednesday night and Thursday.

Mom’s, grandma’s, and aunts are busy making a feast to put before people that they only see three times a year. People confined to nursing homes and hospitals hope that someone comes to visit. Schools and factories are looking forward to some time off.

Creative minds and hands came together to build some of the most creative entries for the City of Greensburg’s annual hay bale decorating contest yet this year. Heather Coyne, Tourism Director at The Big Well Museum & Visitor Information Center, said that all entries were decorated by teams or individuals and had to be completed before the 6 p.m.
