Letter to the Editor: That’s a lot of cow manure!

Pawnee County could be on the receiving end of 5.72 million pounds of manure daily from a proposed 88,000-head cattle feedlot several miles south of Larned. At an average 65 pounds/cow/day, that’s a lot of cattle manure to contend with, on top of the estimated 3.84 million pounds of “output” from the existing two feedlots just south of Larned if they were to operate at their full 59,000 head permitted capacity. This is not considering the 13,000 head feedlot southwest of Pawnee Rock.

New life springs forth at the Hot Cold Tower Gardens

According to prattrecords.com, the Hot and Cold water towers have gained national attention since being painted in 1956. The smaller tower was built in 1901, the larger tower was added in 1909. In the past year, an effort to revitalize the neglected area has surfaced, and citizen Tammy Coleman has taken on the responsibility of making sure the project gets completed.

Pastoral Commentary: Make the first move

God wants us to make the first move. Initiating anything can be intimidating at times. We are very comfortable to wait and do good to those that do good to us but it can be a vulnerable or scary place to make the first move. By being the first to reach out we might be rejected or worse yet ridiculed, but to only react or reciprocate what others do to or for us is not what God wants us to do. God has called us to love and to reach out regardless of the circumstance or the people before us. In the gospel of Luke, Jesus tells us to put love into action:

Perspectively Speaking: How about this for a wild goose chase?

Remember the old Marx Brothers shtick where Groucho is giving Chico and Harpo directions to some secret rendezvous point? As he explains, he points at a map and says go over this road and that, turn left and right, then over the viaduct. At this point, Chico interrupts with “Why a duck?” Groucho does a double take and starts over, but each time he gets to the viaduct, he is interrupted with something like, “Why a duck? Why not a goose? Or a chicken?”

Discipline is not a four-letter word

I have a confession to make. When snow-days happen, my discipline goes out the window. Habits that I have established, based upon getting up and going to the office, take a hiatus. The results are that during at least the first day of snow, I become a great big couch potato. It seems that I remain that way until I start to go stir crazy and need to get out. I am currently looking out my home office window and the snow is just beginning. I will bet you can imagine what is next.
