A lesson in leadership at 4:30 a.m.

This morning, I pulled into the office while it was still dark, about 4:30 a.m. The campus was quiet, as it usually is at that hour. Even in the stillness, I saw someone already working with purpose: one of our custodians, Kristy Holmes, was outside sweeping the sidewalks.

Do you want to hear the truth?

Are any of us happy when someone is truthful with us about something we need to change in our life? I do not like it at the time, but many times we know in our hearts they are speaking the truth to us. Especially if the truth coming from a source we know is reliable and true? The truth they speak may be for our own good. If we listen to what they are saying and do what they say then our lives will be enriched because of their truth.

Pastoral Commentary: Who me, an idolater?

The apostle John closes his first letter with this admonition: “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” (1 Jn. 5:21). We might be tempted to think that this hardly has any relevance in today’s world, especially for us in the West. After all, we’re a rather sophisticated lot – modern, rational, scientific, and all that. In our arrogance we flatter ourselves by thinking we are above being beholden to images carved in wood or stone or made with gold or silver. No sir, none of that superstitious stuff for us!
