Great Plains Wondering: Traveling across a great lake brings perspective

There’s a shorter way to get from Wisconsin to Michigan: across Lake Michigan! For those who may be a little nervous about being out on the open sea but wonder what the experience might be like, the journey on the SS Badger from Manitowoc, WI to Ludington, MI will give you a close approximation. After traveling ten or so miles away from shore, you won’t see anything but water, water all around.Even better, Michigan and the other Great Lakes have an advantage over the ocean: shark free & unsalted (I saw that on a bumper sticker on a car in Pratt years ago). The SS Badger originally served as an icebreaker, operating year-round, when it was first launched in 1953.
