Pratt Elks raise money for local and state veterans

Sunday, August 24 was a beautiful day for the “Fairways For Freedom” golf scramble hosted by Pratt Elks Lodge #1451. Since 2021, the Pratt Elks Lodge has dedicated this event to honoring veterans. The themes for the past years have been: in 2022, “Tee Up for Veterans”; in 2023, “Salute to Veterans”; in 2024, “Swingin’ Fore Veterans”; and this year’s theme is “Fairways for Freedom.” We are proud to share that we have contributed over $16,500 to support our amazing veterans.

Adventures in Reading: AI development has outrun regulation abilities

A few years ago, I blogged about AI. I was concerned about kids using it to cheat on assigned compositions. I bemoaned the impact of artists being displaced by AI created images. I resented the work of authors being downloaded to educate AI how to write, essentially stealing our work without compensation. Was I ever naive! Today, objecting to AI is like the old story of Pandora already being out of the box!

The agriculture industry is a small world. It doesn’t always feel that way when you’re in the middle of wheat harvest or out checking calves on a quiet evening, but time and again, I am reminded of how tightly connected this industry really is.

Bolen talks to city commission about rising property taxes

During the Open Agenda portion of the August 18 Pratt regular commission meeting, the commission heard from one resident concerned with the proposal to allow the revenue rate to rise with inflation. It is not surprising that there was some public response given that, since its last meeting, the city had sent out a letter announcing its intention to raise the rate. It is perhaps surprising that there were not more concerned residents.

Griffith selected for prestigious national FFA band

Skyline High School student Riley Griffith has been selected to be a member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America) National Band. Only eight students from Kansas were selected to be part of this year’s national band. The ensemble of talented musicians has been a fixture at the National FFA Convention since 1947. To be selected, young musicians must undergo a rigorous audition process that not only evaluates their musical abilities but also their standing with their local school. The National Band and Choir consists of no more than 80-90 members and is pulled from a pool of eligible applicants that hail from all corners of the United States.

Farm families awarded by Pratt County Farm Bureau

The Pratt County Farm Bureau honored several members and area farmers for their achievements in agriculture at their annual meeting last Thursday at the Pratt County 4-H Building. Nick and Josie Fox, and their daughters Bryleigh and Layne, were named the Pratt County Farm Family of the Year, and Darren and Jill Hodgkinson were recognized as the Pratt County Natural Resources Award recipient for this year.
