It was so cold this past week that Kiowa County High School postponed their Homecoming plans, abut seniors at the center still dressed up for Spirit Week. Those who made it in through the snow and ice on Friday, and wore their Maverick gear, included Rod Hesser, Daryl Conklin, Randy Rinker, Joleen SeaCat, Max SeaCat and Mitzi Hesser. Go Mavericks!
A recent emergency alert that the State of Kansas sent to cell phone users statewide led me reflect about winter driving and how it seems that we have become more cautious as a society since Covid (not to mention the ease of communicating with wide swaths of the public via technology).
Kyra Kissinger is an award winning triathlete, a mom of three boys, and a fitness guru with a heart to help others. In November 2024, Kissinger (originally from Wichita) took over the Cliff Mock massage business and revamped the 218 S. Main location to better meet customer needs for health and wellness. Her business is called Phoenix Fitness and Massage and she offers services for sports recovery, facial anti-aging, lymphatic and facial release, hot stones, assisted stretching, parties, and office services.
Receiving the first snow of 2025 has been a blessing and a hazard for senior citizens in the St. John area and Stafford County. The Sunflower Center was closed on Monday, 6th and Tuesday, 7th of January. For the brave souls out and about, we opened our doors on the 8th. Meals on Wheels was resumed on the 8th also. I want to commend the volunteers who make the Meals on Wheels delivery possible: Dennis Rice, Doris and Mark Tompkins, Steve Schulz and Jan Stadalman. I also want to thank Dale Thomas and Steve Schulz for cleaning the snow off of the sidewalk around Sunflower Center.

On December 30, the Vernon Filley Art Museum in Pratt took possession of the house and lot located at 505 S. Jackson. This property is contiguous with the vacant lot on the corner of 5th and Jackson streets already owned by the Filley. The combined space will offer a wide range of possibilities for future development to support the mission of the museum. The house on the newly acquired lot is slated for demolition and available for relocation at the expense of the taker. Interested parties should contact the Filley prior to February 15 for details.
