Steak meals make Valentine’s Day special in Greensburg

Andy Kooken at Kook’s Meats in Greensburg is kind of a quiet guy, working hard behind the scenes to serve his local compatriots in Greensburg and Kiowa County, Kansas. On Valentine’s Day 2025, Kooken and two helpers cooked and served 139 steak meals to customers, many of them going as secret valentine dinners to law enforcement, medical and emergency management workers and their spouses.

Rep. Estes requests assurances on Quivira water rights

Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kansas) has sent a letter to recently confirmed Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum highlighting the longstanding work by Kansans to responsibly steward water resources at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and the Rattlesnake Creek Basin, as well as the economic impact the basin has in the region and the need for stability in 2026.

Adventures in Reading: Making progress

Recently we were trying to get organized by getting rid of papers no longer worth keeping. Some of the documents were no longer relevant, but other import/repeats records were inaccessible in the piles of neglected ‘stuff.’ The good news is that we have made progress with our discarding and organizing! However, this blog is not intended to motivate spring house cleaning.

PHS boys’ wrestling wins 2025 CKL title

The Pratt High School Boys’ Wrestling team recently wrapped up their regular season with the annual Central Kansas League Tournament. This tournament featured the best wrestlers from each school in the conference, and Pratt was able to prevail with a team championship and multiple individual titles. This year, the contest was held in Hesston on Thursday, February 13.
