Lady Tigers competitive in new season with new coach

The St. John Lady Tigers volleyball team returns six letterwinners and four starters from last year’s 29 – 16 state tournament qualifying team. New head coach Taci Axmen is excited about the team she steps in to lead after the departure of long-time coach Trish Wade and looks forward to a competitive future.

Skyline football wins season-opener against Norwich

It is a whole new season of Skyline High School football and the Thunderbirds came out of pre-season practice with a new mentality and a team connection that sustained them through a tough first game. The team played on the road against the Eagles of Norwich on Friday, September 5 and came out with a hard-fought win, 22-16. This was a non-conference game, and weather conditions were about as bad as it can get as both teams struggled to control play.

City of Pratt hears RNR concerns

On September 2, 2025, the Pratt City Commission held its required public hearing to be able to pass resolution 090225 levying property taxes above the revenue neutral rate. The hearing is required by law whenever the property tax rate is to be raised, even though this particular increase really just allowed the mill levy to rise with inflation. After the hearing was concluded, the resolution was passed.

John 3:16 – Believe what?

We read in Romans 10:9-10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Veteran’s View: Everyone deserves a homecoming

My country asked me to join its armed forces in the summer of 1969. Or at least the letter sounded polite – “Greetings from the President of the United States…” The reality of it was that it was pretty much an order rather than a request. Not liking what I had heard about the environs of federal prison, and having been cold in Canada even in July, I showed up at the appointed time and place. After cursory training I got the all-expense paid trip to Vietnam courtesy of the US Army.

Pratt football opens with tough loss at Hoisington

The Pratt High School football team kicked off the 2025 regular season this past Friday, September 5. The Greenbacks traveled to Hoisington for the highly anticipated rivalry game between the two CKL powerhouse teams. A hot start by Pratt didn’t last as Hoisington scored 20 unanswered points in the second half and defeated the Greenbacks in their season opener 34-8.

Empowered Pratt Citizens organized protest, schedule school board candidate chats

On Wednesday, August 27, a group of 20-24 men and women known as Empowered Pratt Citizens (EPC) came together to demonstrate at the Avenue of the Flags with the theme “Workers over Billionaires.” Many were dressed as “workers.” There were those dressed in bright orange construction worker vests, one in a clergy robe, lots of denim, sweatshirts, hard hats, cowboy hats, and baseball caps were present, as well. Signs included comments like “Raise the Taxes on Billionaires,” “Support Immigrants with Kindness & Caring,” “Love Your Neighbor,” and “America Needs Immigrants.” The recognition of their messages by truck drivers passing through town and local drivers going about their business brought handwaves and shouts of joy from the protestors.
