“Change” as a verb means “become different, undergo a transformation or exchange one thing for another.” As people mature and enter the “senior” years, change at times is a challenge. Life seems to have sped up, loss of friends and family to illness or death, having to change living arrangements and locations take a toll on each one of us. Through all the change in our lives, Sunflower Senior Center has become a “safe place” to gather, share our concerns, enjoy some laughter and of course have a cup of coffee.
Medicare open enrollment began October 15 (how could you miss it with all the tv ads?) and ends December 7. Sunflower Senior Center will have “Coffee & Donuts” Friday morning, November 8 for Medicare Part B, Prescription Drug Insurance, and Advantage Plan question and answer session. Mark Pope, local agent, will be available to visit with seniors while enjoying the coffee and donuts.
November Pot Luck Luncheon will be on Monday, 4, at 12 noon. A program following the luncheon will include Jo McFadden, Director of Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library sharing ideas for seniors provided by the library.
Other regular activities continue with toe nail clinic, blood pressure check, afternoon cards and games, Keep It Moving exercise, BINGO and coffee/conversation as scheduled in the monthly flyer available at the center. Scheduling Meals on Wheels and Friendship Meals should be made the day before the required meal. Looking ahead in November, The Emergency Food Assistance Program (commodities) distribution is scheduled for November 26, 9-10 a.m., Witt Community Center, St. John. This program is available to any age, low-income household distributed by senior volunteers.
The annual Christmas Dinner and Board Meeting will be December 11 at 12 noon. Sunflower Senior Center provide the meat, drinks and bread for the meal. Those attending are asked to bring a pot luck dish to share. A program of music by Rus Shelton and the final BINGO game for 2024 will follow the very brief election of board members. Please plan to attend.
The Centers hours are Monday through Thursday 9:15-3:15 and Friday 9:15-1:15. We are closed on Saturday and Sunday. For further information about the Center activities, scheduling meals, appointments, reservations and reserving medical equipment, please call Sandy Smith at 620-549-3403. I’m requesting that those who have used my personal phone number for center changes please refrain from using it in the coming weeks. I will be MIA for a couple weeks due to scheduled shoulder surgery. Thank you.
