The Nephites, on the other hand, rallied in righteousness under the great leader Moroni, and were inspired by a greater cause. They fought to protect their lands, homes, wives and children, and their liberty “that they might worship God according to their desires…for they knew that if they should fall into the hands of the Lamanites, that whosoever should worship…the true and living God, the Lamanites would destroy.”(3) The battle was fierce, but the greatly outnumbered Nephites prevailed, and finally Moroni caused that the work of death should cease, and suffered the Lamanite army to depart, after they had entered into to a covenant of peace with the Nephites. And the number of the dead on both sides was “exceedingly great”(5).
