I had been waiting for five years, and then it just didn’t pan out.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — While experts recommend planting cotton from May 1 to June 5, Kansas State University extension agronomist Logan Simon said variables like germination rate, soil and air temperatures more appropriately indicate when growers should break out their seeders and get cotton in the ground.

The Pratt High School Track team recently competed in the 2025 Central Kansas League Meet, which featured all the schools in the league. This year, the meet took place on Thursday, May 15, with Nickerson being the host school. Both sides of the team competed very well, and several athletes claimed individual championships in various events.

Macksville High School senior Kendall Grippin has signed a letter of intent to play baseball with Friends University. He played with the Kinsley-Macksville baseball team for the past two years. In his tenure as a baseball player, Grippin was the 2024 Five Tool Oklahoma Tournament Player of the Game (championship game) pitched 4 innings 4K’s 1 hit 0 Runs.

The Stafford Co. Museum Library will host “A History of the American Indian Boarding Schools,” a presentation and discussion by Eric Anderson on Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m., at 100 N. Main in Stafford. At the May 19 regular meeting, the Pratt City Commission addressed the issue of its emergency dispatchers’ pay. Although the City Manager has authority to raise wages on her own, Gina Goff wanted to be sure and apprise the city commissioners of the change and receive their blessing. Pratt has had a very difficult time retaining dispatchers.

This time of year calls for preparation for many storms and hazards. May is designated as National Wildfire Awareness Month because it is the time of year that wildfire risks rise significantly due to increased heat and dryness. The Kansas Department of Insurance reminds homeowners to evaluate their property for fire risks.

The Wheat State Mercantile opened its doors at 303 S. Main earlier this month, bringing to Pratt a place to buy homegrown, homemade and hometown products, including direct market beef grown just down the road in Pratt County.
