Kids’ Fishing Derby nets a lot of fun

Shouts of glee, an occasional cool breeze, a bit of dance music, and shared camaraderie made the Second Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby a day of fun for more than 30 young participants and that many or more adults who gathered at Pratt County Veterans Memorial Lake last Saturday.An over-abundance of small perch did not deter the young fishermen and fisherwomen who had just as much fun catching the small fish, as they did cheering for those who snagged the big ones.

Kansas unemployment rate climbs to 3.1%

TOPEKA — The 0.5 percentage point climb in the Kansas unemployment rate during the past year fell in the middle range of increases reported across the board in a five-state region that included Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Colorado, state labor agencies said.During the past 12 months, Oklahoma experienced the smallest expansion of joblessness and Colorado the largest growth in unemployment among the five states.
