Meyer and Schmidt elected to City Commission; local results reflect statewide choices except for governor

More than half of Pratt County’s 5,600 registered voters took to the polls on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022 to exercise their freedom to vote. That 55.89 percent of voters overwhelmingly sent U.S. Senate incumbent Jerry Moran (R) back to work for Kansas with 2,413 votes to (D) Mark Holland’s 585 votes. U.S. Representative from District 4 Ron Estes (R) received overwhelming support at 77 percent with 2,373 votes over rival Bob Hernandez (D); while additional decisive victories included Kris Kobach (R) for Attorney General with a 65.23 percent advantage and Steve Johnson (R) for State Treasurer over Lynn Rogers (D) at 68.09 percent.

The “Military Appreciation Scholarship” valued at up to $2,500 each, is open to new students who plan on enrolling in any of the online, nonprofit university’s 60+ undergraduate and graduate degree programs in IT, business, K-12 teacher education, and health professions, including nursing.

Sandhill cranes pull at my soul

When I hear the sounds of the Sandhill cranes migrating through Kansas at this time of year, I run for the door to see if I can catch a glimpse of them passing by. I listen to their calls as they soar and mill about in groups high overhead, large wings catching the sun. I hear that hauntingly beautiful sound that is so hard to describe, and I feel my heart and soul reaching to connect with them somehow. I don’t know why, but that throaty trill pulls at me and each time I hear it I am glad and sad at the same time.

Forgotten people and things

Those of you who follow this blog are well acquainted with Isaac Werner, a once forgotten man whom many of you now know well, whether through reading “Prairie Bachelor” or by following this blog or by attending one of my book talks. Except as a name on a genealogy chart, until I began my research, even his family had forgotten Isaac. Perhaps his life would have remained unknown had he not kept a journal, and but for my curiosity about my own family, would anyone else have picked up his 480 page journal and discovered its priceless content?
