Land donated for settlement at historic Black settlement in Kansas

rebecca.bullis@tpl.org Trust for Public Land has donated a parcel of land for a new visitor center at the site, which is the oldest and last remaining historic Black settlement west of the Mississippi River NICODEMUS, Kan. — The Township of Nicodemus, Trust for Public Land, and the National Park Service announced last week the expansion of the Nicodemus National Historic Site.

Gilkey and Sneed going to state as regional tennis runner

Kiowa County High School tennis players Liberty Gilkey and Elizabeth Sneed placed second in doubles and qualified for State as runner-ups at 1A Regional Tennis last week in Scott City. The Maverick duo played four matches on Friday and Saturday, defeating Goodland, (Horinek/Lundgren) 6-2, 6-1, Meade (Reimer/ Reimer) 6-0, 6-0, Cimarron (Buchholz/Housman) 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals, and Sterling (Rowland/ Wilson) in a great matchup final.

My zero-sum hummers

I adore “my” hummingbirds, arguably the best in-close flyers in the world, with reaction times so fast they zip in next to angry defensive bees to score a sip of sugar water despite the bees coming at them in a bee fury that would dissuade virtually any other critter, including me.

Fire prevention week focuses on children

Topeka, Kan. – From toddlers taking their first steps to excited grandchildren waiting to lick leftover cake batter, the adventurous and playful nature of children that surround us often requires conforming in ways that protect the young and innocent. As a participant in National Fire Prevention Week October 9-15, Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt would like to highlight several kid-friendly fire prevention efforts Kansans should consider in their efforts to keep their family and property safe.
