Tips for sports betting fans

Sports gambling is set to become legal in Kansas on Sept. 1, just in time for the NFL and college football seasons. Last year, the American Gaming Association estimated that 31.4 million Americans bet over $7B on the Super Bowl and that over 45 million people in the U.S. bet over $3B on March Madness. While we know what this means for the state (Kansas Lottery is saying this will generate $10 million in revenue by 2025), what should Kansans be looking for as they get swamped with sportsbook advertising over the coming weeks?

KCC awarded $25 million federal grant to plug abandoned wells

TOPEKA – The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has been awarded a $25 million initial federal grant to help plug abandoned wells in the state. The initial grant is part of $1.15 billion earmarked under the Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to help states remediate abandoned oil and gas wells. A total of $4.7 billion has been allocated over the next eight years to plug abandoned wells in the U.S. The KCC is eligible to receive another $33.6 million in future formula grant funding.

Save the date for taco fundraiser

Fiesta Taco Fundraiser: SAVE THE DATE September 10 from 5:30-7 p.m. Join us for a fundraiser to raise funds for our general bills and expenses. We will have Beef and Pork Tacos with Saffron Rice, Refried Beans, and homemade sheet cake. We will also have some fun listening to Fiesta music and have a photo booth with props for a photo op!! Carry-out’s will be available.

Art for art’s sake, and more

Creativity seems to flourish under the hand of Kiowa County artist Jayci Smitherman. Not only do her changing and colorful windows decorate the front of Haviland Broadband offices on Main Street in Haviland where she is a marketing manager and customer service representative, but she and her husband, Dwight Smitherman, have completely gutted and creatively remodeled their Kiowa County home. Now she is using her artistic talents to make and sell resin boards that have a variety of uses, with proceeds to go towards a special fine-arts trip she plans to take with her daughter in winter.

PCC Athletics hosts 4th Annual Beaver Backer Golf Tournament

Pratt, Kan. - The fourth annual Beaver Backer Golf Tournament was held at Park Hills Country Club on Saturday, August 20. There were 14 teams who participated in the tournament to help raise funds for the Pratt Community College (PCC) Athletic Department. The tournament started at 9:00 am and included a performance from the Beaver Cheer team, eighteen holes of golf, a visit from all 13 athletic teams on the course, lunch and an auction following the tournament.
