Smith brings a bigger perspective to Chamber leadership job

New Pratt Area Chamber of Commerce Director Ashley Smith said she enjoyed visiting with many local business owners and citizens last Thursday on S. Main during a July 28 Welcome Event. She said her position as director and the welcoming response she has received is not something she takes lightly. She said she looks forward to finding ways to grow and foster relationships between the people and businesses who make up the Pratt landscape.

For the last three and half months, the Pratt County Historical Museum on South Ninnescah has been honoring fourvoutstanding women of our community with a special display. Jeanne Carson, Barabara Shinkle, Sharon Brehm, and Dorotha Giannangelo were picked by museum personnel for the special feature.

Some of you might have received a political flier in the mail this past week about the constitutional abortion amendment on the ballot for Kansas. This flier was mailed out by a group that calls themselves “Kansans for Constitutional Freedom.” The flier was authored by a clergyman from the Olathe area, a Reverend Jay McKell.

Unusual outages limit electricity in Kiowa County

Electrical outages in Greensburg on July 19 and 27 were uncomfortable but explainable, and resolved fairly quickly, but another electrical outage that covered much of Kiowa County over the weekend was a bit harder to explain, or understand.

Heat stress was blamed for thousands of cattle dying in feedlots in southwestern Kansas in June. The past weeks, with record high temperatures in Stafford County, no ranchers have reported heat stress in their cattle.

Heidi Fisher’s Sweet Corn just finished its seventh year of business in St. John. Fisher, a junior at St. John High School, said she has had a great year this year, selling more than 600 dozen ears of corn the past two weeks.

The Macksville City Library’s Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program has come to a close for grades 6th and under. The library hosted six story hours during June and July, and, following the Oceans theme, ended with a pool party.
