You know the old joke: How can you tell when a politician is lying? When his/ her lips are moving. That extreme cynicism about politicians is reinforced by the recent passage of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). In addition to being the most egregiously misnamed act in memory (more on that below), the dishonest statements made by its supporters have been breathtaking in their brazenness.

Dear Editor: Having family in Pratt and being a native Kansan myself, I read the Pratt Tribune article “Western Kansas badlands hold clues to mysteries about climate change, and long ago life” (Aug 17 issue). I agree with the basic premise that old fossils exist beneath the Kansas prairie which was once a glacier and then an ocean, depending on the ebb and flow of the Ice Age to our Modern Age.

Special to the Tribune Anita DeWeese, an Agricultural science teacher at Skyline School recently completed High School 2.0 Seed to STEM workshop sponsored by the Kansas Corn Commission. The Seed to STEM workshop provided over 100 science teachers with classroom lessons and lab exercises to teach about corn, biotechnology and ethanol.
School started Wednes- day, August 17 for 387 students at Skyline who were welcomed to the classroom by many returning teachers as well as five new ones on the west Pratt campus. “It’s very exciting to see five young adults who are starting their teaching careers at Skyline this year,” said USD 438 Skyline Superintendent Becca Flowers.

Retired WNBA Basketball legend Jackie Stiles will speak at Barton Community College at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Fine Arts Auditorium to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Title IX. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
