St. John and the surrounding area was the destination of many former slaves in the late 1800s, and though there are few who remember these families and individuals who forged their way through the rugged Midwest to settle in Stafford County, recent celebrations have highlighted their existence.
The skies were beautifully illuminated with red white and blue fireworks on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of July. The Monday holiday extended the celebration in this little town. There were three firework stands open on July 1. The St.John cheerleading squad raised money for their cheer program. The St.John Fireworks Tent, run by Wald and Company wholesale fireworks, has been family-owned and operated for 30 years. The downtown firework store was run by Scott Claussen and Ami Claussen; they came back from Florida to sell fireworks in their annual shop.

As if it wasn’t enough to lose just about everything they owned in a Father’s Day fire last month, Pratt residents Reggie and Cherylan Mendenhall, their son, Dakota, and grandson Malachi, lost other personal items that had been in storage in another house fire last Tuesday at the corner of Cleveland and N. Pearl in Pratt.

Effective June 27, Governor Laura Kelly has approved updated drought declarations for Kansas counties with Executive Order #22-06. This drought declaration places all 105 Kansas counties either in watch, warning or emergency status.
Since Heather Holaday, nurse practitioner, has completed advanced training in wound care, she now provides all treatment in this specialty at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital. Previously, Holaday worked side-by-side with Kelly Miller, advanced practice registered nurse certified in wound care.
