When we received the message from David Werner explaining that he and his wife were hoping to drive from Wernersville, PA to South Central Kansas to visit Isaac Werner’s grave and to see the Journal, as well as anything else of interest in relation to Isaac, I was pleased...and then worried. The two things he mentioned were certainly available, but what else was there to show them? Nearly all of the structures from Isaac’s time are gone, and even the land Isaac claimed has changed. What is there to see?

I’ve been fascinated by a colony of red ants that live in our pasture lately. I have to cross their path each day when I am out watering livestock and filling buckets to water our young fruit trees. I could just watch the activity of these ants for hours, and sometimes I almost do!

Kansas legislators want to enlarge their power to control women’s lives. They have proposed a constitutional amendment on the August 2 ballot that hands them that power. Their plan distrusts women and will expand the scope of government. Kansans who value individual liberty and limited government should view this proposition with profound skepticism.
I’m a dog walker and bicycle commuter, so I spend a lot of time on residential streets at less than highway speed. One result of this is that I notice and pay attention to campaign yard signs. As the vote over the proposed anti-abortion amendment approaches, that attention is paying off.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. and CHICAGO — The Purdue University/ CME Group Ag Economy Barometer continued to slide in June, down 2 points to a reading of 97. Producers’ expectations for the future also weakened. The Index of Future Expectations fell 5 points to a reading of 96, marking the lowest level for the index since October 2016. Meanwhile, producers were slightly more optimistic regarding current conditions; the Index of Current Conditions improved 5 points to a reading of 99. The Ag Economy Barometer is calculated each month from 400 U.S. agricultural producers’ responses to a telephone survey. This month’s survey was conducted June 13-17.
