On June 25, Lyn and Larry Fenwick of Macksville took some special visitors to the Stafford Co. Museum Library in Stafford and the Homecoming Hall Museum in St. John, where they were hosted by Michael Hathaway. These visitors were modern day relatives of Isaac Werner, the subject of Lyn’s book “Prairie Bachelor: The Story of a Kansas Homesteader and the Populist Movement.” (University Press of Kansas, 2020).
The USD 350 Recreation baseball program finished their season on July 7 with a local pool party. More summer fun will be had at the Wetlands Water Park in Great Bend on July 24, 2022 from 7-9 p.m. for all participants and their families.
This year, Pratt’s annual Oktoberfest will be held at Lemon Park instead of at the Green Sports Complex as in its previous four years. Three of the event’s organizers, Jackie Mundt, Dakota Holtgrieve, and Scott Goodheart presented their reasons for the change of venue to the Pratt City Board of Commissioners at its July 5th meeting. Mayor Deeds was not able to be present at the meeting as he was in the hospital.
Heavy on the minds and hearts of many in Pratt County after the 4th of July were thoughts of families dealing with unexpected deaths and critical injuries that occurred over the holiday weekend. On Sunday, July 3, Pratt County Dispatch received a 911 call for help in a pasture near 294 SE 10th Street.

A nearly $8.8 million resurfacing project will start around July 25 on about 38 miles of K-42 in Pratt, Barber and Kingman counties. The Kansas Department of Transportation project involves a recycle and hot-mix-asphalt overlay on K-42 in those counties.

Every summer we look forward to July fourth because it’s filled with fun things to do, like barbecuing, picnics, games, family gatherings, camping, and fireworks. And of course, for many it’s a paid holiday which is always nice. However, along with the celebrations, there is also a solemn awareness of those who have served and sacrificed for our country so that we can enjoy our freedom. Independence Day focuses on the courage of many Americans who fought against Great Britain in the Revolutionary War and with much blood-shed declared the victory and helped establish this great nation. On July fourth, 1776, the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, declared the sovereignty of the United States of America as they signed the Declaration of Independence which is recognized as our nations birthday.
Jeremiah 30: 2 “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.” Over the years I’ve found myself hurrying throughout most days and finally realized I was missing some very important parts of my life by trying to accomplish too many things. I once heard said, “A journey is not only about the destination, but also about the trip.” For many years, I’ve believed life is about the experiences we have.
Before our first child Lee, was born, I was shopping in the baby section, at what I thought, at the time was a fancy store, where I found a soft, adorable brown teddy bear with a red bow around his neck and as a bonus when you wound it up, it played music and its head turned. Because it was on sale I was able to buy it.
