KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Blue-green algae look much like other, more common algae but they’re really a type of bacteria called “cyanobacteria.” And this cyanobacteria, when in high concentrations, can cause illness in both people and pets. That’s why each year, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) work jointly to alert the public about potentially harmful algae blooms.
I support the idea of allowing qualified and highly trained volunteer teachers the option of having safe, secure, and immediate access to a firearm in the classroom and at school. Sharon Hartin Iorio, dean emerita at the Wichita State University College of Education recently wrote an opinion column run by many newspapers in the state of Kansas noting my position and arguing it won’t improve school safety. Her argument is incorrect.
The weather event that killed thousands of cattle in southwest Kansas last month was a rare combination of extreme factors. But it highlights the ongoing risk that heat stress poses for cattle, especially as climate change pushes temperatures higher.
To cap off their summer season, the Pratt High School summer baseball team, led by head coach Ron Hill and assistant coaches Kyle Ricke and Matthew Hook, traveled to Buena Vista, Colorado, where they spent a weekend of fun and baseball.
The Fromme-Birney Round Barn, south of Mullinville in Kiowa County has received some attention lately, part of a feature in Kansas Travel with KansasTravel.org. It was also named in Another 8 Wonders of Kansas Architecture list as a place to be sure to visit. And, it was part of a PBS Kansas (Wichita channel 8 ) documentary on March 21 called “Historic Buildings of Kansas - Part II.”
WHEN IT IS Christmas in July just about anything goes, and from the list of registered vendors for the July 16 event at the Lighthouse Worship Center in Greensburg that wish may come true. For local entrepreneur Patricia Fuller however, it’s all about tumblers.
August Siefkes of Hudson auditioned for, was accepted to, and participated in the John Philip Sousa National Honor Band June 26-30 in Massachusetts. Siefkes, 17, will be a senior at Great Bend High School this fall.
The Jolly Workers 4-H Club was held on June 5th 2022 at the Hudson Community Hall after the Club Tour. On the tour the club went to the McAlister’s, Dunn’s, Dick’s, Peterson’s, Barney’s, Ward’s, Alpers Farm, and Foote’s. The meeting was called to order by President Ian Dunn. Pledges were by Ryer Ward. Roll call was led by Weston Peterson it was “How many projects have you completed?”
On July 7th the Jolly Workers 4-H club held a short meeting followed by a fair ground clean up with all the 4-H clubs. With a lot of people to help they were able to quickly get the fairgrounds in shape for the county fair which starts on Wednesday, July 13. After the fair clean up the 4-Hers got to enjoy ice cream provided by the Corn Valley 4-H club.
