Turn around. Choose life

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I spent two full days enjoying Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the panhandle of Texas south of Amarillo. The park’s road runs seven miles from start to finish. The canyon is over 120 miles long. We saw enough, but not much of the canyon’s vastness.

Accessing public lands for hunting, fishing just got easier

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Beginning this month, hunters and anglers will benefit from a new-andimproved system designed to make accessing public lands in Kansas easier than ever. As part of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks’ (KDWP) all-new licensing purchase system – Go Outdoors KS – outdoor recreationalists will not need a separate login to “check in” and out of KDWP-managed properties, as the Go Outdoors KS licensing system and mobile app is fully integrated.

Are you watching shitepokes?

A few years ago, while out cruising the backroads near Inman, we discovered a group of blue heron nests high in trees along the river. We stop by each spring to check on them and to marvel at the almost comical sight of great blue herons standing tall in the middle of hodge-podge collections of twigs and leaves in the top of cottonwood trees. We checked on them just recently, and they are there again this year. I’m reminded of a funny conversation I had with a nursing home resident a couple years before I retired.
