Dramatic effect in the dark

I wish I could tell you how many miles that I have driven in the darkness of the night. Driving down the highway, not knowing when a creature, big or small, would dart out in front of you. The sound of your truck being torn up because the deer thought your headlights were to help them to cross the road.

Faith Column: Pentecost

Saron Lutheran/ Our Saviour’s of Baxter (ELCA), Montevideo, MI It seems like Pentecost should get more attention than it does -- both in the church and in the world at large. I am sure that there are faith traditions that do Pentecost more justice than Lutherans, but it isn’t exactly a household name. It probably doesn’t help that the event was beyond Luke’s descriptive powers (there is a sound like the wind and tongues as of fire), so the religious art work depicting Pentecost makes the Apostles look like a group of birthday candles. Pentecost also loses out because many who might ask why the paraments are red have already begun their summer vacation from church. Whatever the case may be, the fact remains that the Holy Spirit made a dramatic entrance into an international crowd that had gathered in Jerusalem, including some 120 followers of Jesus.

Southeast Kansas road trip very enjoyable

BKRT, also known as The Big Kansas Road Trip, took place the first weekend of June in Southeast Kansas. Sponsored by the Marci Penner and the Kansas Sampler Foundation, this event has become “the thing to do” for my husband and myself. The trip annually focuses on three counties in a certain part of the state. This year, southeast Kansas, the one part of the state that that we are the least familiar. Bourbon, Cherokee and Crawford counties were the three spotlighted counties.

The legacy of smallpox

Concerns about “monkeypox” are closely tied to the eradication of smallpox. But American’s recent impression of viruses as rapidly developing variants and our immunity only lasting months do not apply to either of these members of the Poxviridae family. They are double-stranded DNA viruses while the coronaviruses are completely unrelated single-stranded RNA viruses.
