Farmers and ranchers make impactful contributions to Kansas economy

As the weather warms, people fire up their grills, grab their tongs and reach for mouth-watering steaks and real beef burgers to create memories with families and friends. In doing so, they are supporting a beef community that positively contributes to the environmental, economic, and nutritional well-being of Kansas. Recognizing the substantial importance of the beef community, Governor Laura Kelly has declared May as Beef Month. In addition, the Governor plans to officially sign the proclamation at Lyons Ranch, near Manhattan, in the coming weeks.

An opportunity to practice or learn archery skills

An opportunity to practice or learn archery skills is being hosted again at the Blythe Fitness Center on Monday, May 9th. Pratt High School Archery members will be available to help those wanting to learn or improve archery skills. From 6-7 p.m. the archery will be available for students ages 10 to 18. From 7-8 p.m. archery will be available for adults to learn or to practice. photo by Michelle Popovich

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans available to Kansas small businesses due to drought

Small non-farm businesses in 36 Kansas counties are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in the following primary counties that began March 1, 2022.

Barclay College hosts criminals and cops in Haviland

Both criminals and cops inundated the campus of Barclay College on Friday, April 22, 2022, for the Deputy for a Day program; albeit the cops were real, the criminals were portrayed mainly by the students and staff. The Kiowa County Sheriff ’s Department, Greensburg Police Department, and the Criminal Justice Department of Barclay College partnered to provide real-life crime scenarios for campus students to observe and participate in.

Tactical training leads to survivalist thinking

There can come the point in conflict or a crisis situation when we think, “I just can’t take it anymore.” Perhaps this state of mind is fueled by living in a culture that seems fixated on how hard things seem. Today, social media is teeming with people obsessed with sharing their feelings. Often complaining about how depressed they are or how scared they feel, or how difficult life is for them, rather than focusing on “noble and virtuous things” [Philippians 4:8] that add value to life and community.
