DeWeese teacher to lead professional institute

Anita DeWeese, agriscience educator at Skyline, was recently selected to facilitate a Professional Development Institute for Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) this summer. De- Weese is one of 80 educators who will serve as a Lead Teacher because of advanced competency in the curriculum and ability to demonstrate excellent facilitation skills. DeWeese attended eliteELEVATION in Nashville, TN, March 24-26, 2022, with teachers from more than 20 states in preparation for this national role. Lead Teachers will facilitate CASE’s inquiry-based curriculum that shifts teacher-led instruction to student-directed learning.

Pratt rallies past Larned

LARNED – Thanks to Logan Erway’s hitting, Larned held a 7-5 lead on Pratt through five innings. But Larned’s pitching and defense collapsed as Pratt scored 10 runs in the final two innings for a 15-7 Central Kansas League baseball victory.

Kansas saw the 10th smallest drop in travel spending during COVID

For the first two years of the pandemic, the shifting landscape around COVID-19 affected travel more than almost any sector of the economy. Concerns about the spread of the virus and changes in travel restrictions and public health guidance led many would-be travelers to hold off on trips. As a result, industries like air travel and lodging saw much lower than usual demand throughout 2020 and 2021, and closely related businesses like restaurants and arts, entertainment, and recreation facilities also suffered. But according to recent data from the U.S. Travel Association, many indicators like hotel room demand and overall travel spending are at or near pre-pandemic levels.

Speakers to address workforce challenges

SBA’s New Great Plains Region Administrator Vercie Lark will provide the keynote address at the Kansas Chamber’s 2022 Kansas Minority Business Summit (KMBS) on April 12, 2022. The KMBS will take place in both Kansas City and Garden City this year as a hybrid in-person and virtual summit designed to provide resources, information, and networking opportunities aimed at helping their businesses prosper.

The Kiowa County Commissioners convened in regular session March 31 to oversee the legislative and administrative powers of Kiowa County. They did quick work of approving their consent agenda, previous meeting minutes, and a merit payroll change for Justin Rugg, before turning attention to a request made by the Economic Development Committee in the previous meeting.
