Devotional: Derived greatness found in Psalms

In Psalm 18 King David speaks of his greatness as a derivative of God’s greatness. The title foreshadows the content of the Psalm, “A Psalm of David…who addressed the words of this song to the LORD on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.” (ESV) The Psalm testifies to David’s greatness, but only as derived from his union with the LORD.

Redemption and wholeness rather than guilt and shame

A proposed Florida law prohibits any teacher in the state from providing information about the full brutality of our country’s history of black chattel slavery, JimCrow apartheid that followed along with serial atrocities including the terrorism of lynching, and the legacy of this in contemporary institutionalized racial bias. The official reason, right there in the text of the law, is because awareness of our authentic history might cause some individuals to “feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress on account of his or her race, color, sex, or national origin.”

God searches for those who drift away

No matter where we come from or how we have been taught, we are responsible for what we think, what we say, and how we act. As optimism and pessimism are learned behaviors, we know that our conduct and worldviews can be changed and controlled if this is our desire. Our spiritual understanding about who God is and who we are in Him must become more than a hope or a chance of fate. Having a personal relationship with Him is based on knowing that we have been purchased with the blood that Jesus shed on the cross and receiving His grace that transforms us.
